Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how businesses operate at a fundamental level. In this session, we cover how AI is changing the work of the manager and what the future of organizations and competition will look like. We will discuss concrete examples from human resources and finance. 

We will also introduce the new "Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Management Initiative at IESE" and how IESE is working to help you prepare for what is coming.

    Assistant Professor of Strategic Management

    Sampsa Samila received his PhD from Columbia University (New York, NY, USA) in Mathematics and his MSc from Helsinki University of Technology (Espoo, Finland; now part of Aalto University) in Mathematics and Economics. He has taught previously at Columbia Business School, Brock University (St Catharines, ON, Canada), and the National University of Singapore.

    At IESE, Sampsa teaches artificial intelligence, innovation strategy, and competitive strategy in a range of programs from MBA and EMBA to senior executives. He is particularly focused on how new technologies like AI enable new business models, the challenges of organizing to develop the capabilities and deliver the value, and how to change the mindset of executives to understand the changes brought by these new developments. As the Academic Director, he designs and leads the Artificial Intelligence for Executives open enrollment program for senior executives. He has written a number of cases on Scribendi, Siemens, Uber, Amazon, and others. He is currently writing cases on AI business transformation in different industries. Sampsa also speaks extensively on AI and advices companies.

    Sampsa?s research focuses primarily on artificial intelligence, innovation, entrepreneurship, and strategy. His most recent working paper tracks the dramatic increase in the demand for AI skills in the labor market and he is currently engaged in studying the causes and consequences of AI adoption in firms. His other projects include gender and ethnic integration in innovation as well as trust and social networks. His prior work has studied for instance how success persists in venture capital, how venture capital generates innovation and economic growth, and how networks shape the path of commercial development. His work has been published in highly-respected journals such as American Sociological Review, Management Science, Research Policy, and Review of Economics and Statistics. His work has been discussed in Institutional Investor, Slate, Huffington Post, The Atlantic, Harvard Business Review, IESE Insight, and elsewhere.

    Associate Professor of Managing People in Organizations

    Sebastien Brion is an Associate Professor of Managing People in Organizations at IESE Business School. He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley. In his research, Professor Brion explores the psychological effects of power, focusing on the attainment, maintenance, and loss of power in group and organizational settings. His dissertation explored how biases in the way that powerful individuals perceive their alliances with others contribute to the loss of power. In addition, he has explored the impact of overconfidence on leadership, investigating the critical distinction between leadership emergence and leadership effectiveness. Professor Brion's research has been highlighted in numerous publications, including The Economist, Le Monde, DieWelt, and Valor Económico.

    At IESE, Professor Brion teaches core classes on Leadership and Human Resources Management, and electives on Power and Influence, at the MBA and Executive level. Professor Brion has taught in executive programs for firms such as L'Oreal, Santander, Nissan, NLNG (Lagos, Nigeria), and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (National Railways of Kazakhstan). In addition, he has held a Visiting Professor position at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and has taught in executive program s for the Haas School of Business and MDE (Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire). 

    As part of his professional activities Professor Brion has conducted research and consulting projects in the human resources and social media industries.

    Assistant Professor, Department of Financial Management

    Mireia Giné is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Financial Management at IESE Business School. She received her Bachelors and an MSc in Economics from Pompeu Fabra University. She received her Ph.D. from University of Barcelona and was a visiting scholar at MIT (1999) and at the University of Pennsylvania (2000-2001). Prior to joining IESE, Prof. Giné spent more than ten years at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, as a Director at Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS). WRDS has become the global standard for data infrastructure and research applications to more than 390 academic and financial institutions around the world. Prof. Giné joined WRDS in 2001 in the early development phase as part of the research team. Currently, she oversees the group's international initiatives and business development, both on the academic and corporate front. Prof. Giné's research interests are focused on corporate finance and governance. Her work examines how corporate governance mechanisms provide value to firms and how they impact corporate policies such as investments, M&A activity and compensation practices. Recently, she has been studying how shareholder activism affects corporate decision making, firm performance and compensation practices. Her research has been published in the Journal of Finance and the Review of Finance and has received several academic awards, including The Brattle Prize.

    IESE Dean

     

    Professor Franz Heukamp was appointed Dean of IESE Business School in September 2016. Previously, he held the positions of Associate Dean for MBA Programs and Secretary General of IESE.

    Prof. Heukamp teaches Managerial Decision Sciences and has a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His teaching specialties are decision analysis and forecasting methods. Prof. Heukamp teaches in the MBA, Executive-MBA and other executive education programs of IESE including the Advanced Management Program directed at senior business leaders.

    His main area of research is behavioral decision-making with a special interest in the area of Neuroeconomics. He is a member of The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences and the Neuroeconomics Society.
