Founded in 1891, Philips started as a manufacturer of light bulbs, later becoming one of the largest electronics companies in the world, known for a wide variety of products including audio products, house appliances, and much more. From 2011, Philips embarked on a major shift focusing the company on healthcare and spinning off other parts of the company. Right now, Philips is an undisputed leader in healthcare products, services, and solutions aiming at improving the health and well-being of billions of people globally through meaningful innovation. In the 31 years Mr. Henk de Jong has worked at Philips, he has been among other things responsible for kitchen appliances, Senseo coffee, Chief of International Markets and Member of the Executive Committee, and now CEO of Philips Domestic Appliances. Mr. Henk de Jong will comment on the decade of transformation of Philips, which completely changed the focus of this 130-year-old company.

    Govert Vroom, Professor of Strategic Management

    Professor Govert Vroom obtained his award-winning doctoral dissertation from INSEAD (France), where he focused on competitive strategy, studying the intensity of rivalry between firms. Later work has centered on the performance effect of business models, business model diversification, and capital allocation within multinational corporations. His research interest recently broadened to include the purpose of companies in society. In his research, Professor Vroom has studied the hotel industry, the retailing sector, mobile applications platforms, and penalty kicks in football. His work has been published in leading scholarly journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science. Prof. Vroom is an active participant in academic societies including the roles of Chair of the Competitive Strategy interest group of the Strategic Management Society, member of the Executive Committee of the Strategic Management division of the Academy of Management, and member of the editorial board of various academic journals. Apart from being a researcher and teacher, Prof. Vroom consults in the area of strategy formulation.
